Lamar State College Orange Formalizes Transfer Agreement with Texas Southern University

Lamar State College Orange Tuition Capped by TSUS Board of Regents

Lamar State College Orange has formed a transfer agreement with Texas Southern University. Both schools will celebrate the agreement during a ceremony at the Shahan Events Center on Monday, November 11.

Transfer agreements between two-year and four-year colleges often are called “two for two” programs, since students starting a program at a community college can plan for their next two years at a university before transferring. According to its latest enrollment numbers, 81% of LSCO students are first-generation and 76% are enrolled part-time, meaning they are enrolled in less than 12 credit hours of classes per semester.

The agreement with TSU is the school’s fourth partnership with a four-year university since the beginning of the year.

Batten Down the Hatches - Freezing Weather Ahead

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a hard freeze watch along and north of I-10 for Tuesday night Wednesday morning. A Freeze Watch has been issued south of I-10.

During freezing weather in Southeast Texas, remember the following to protect your home and pets:

  • Insulate exterior pipes that run along outer walls to prevent freezing
  • Know how to shut off water valves in the event a pipe bursts
  • Provide adequate shelter to keep pets warm and ensure they have access to unfrozen water and food
  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or charcoal-burning device inside or in any partially enclosed area
  • Never use a gas stove/oven for a heating source – this could cause carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Keep space heaters AT LEAST three feet from all objects
  • Never use an extension cord with a space heater.
  • Test smoke alarms and replace batteries before re-installing
  •  Have a flashlight and blankets in place in the event of power failures

6th Annual Orange County Special Angels Rodeo Set to Kick Off November 9

The 6th Annual Special Angels Rodeo will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the T2 Arena & Event Center. 3810 Old Peveto Road in Orange, Registration will open at 9:00 am and opening ceremonies will kick off at 10:00 am.

This event plays host to more than 300 special needs individuals of all ages throughout East and Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. The goal of the program is to provide a one-of-a-kind experience that allows participants to be a cowboy or cowgirl for a day. Their Special Angels are the stars of the show on rodeo day, and all of their events and activities are designed and planned around them. Each of the activities can be adapted to meet the needs of all participants.

The rodeo is overseen by a team of highly qualified individuals from many different walks of life. Physical therapists, nurses, and emergency medical personnel are always on-site during the event. Law enforcement officers, including uniformed personnel and plainclothes officers, help ensure that everyone is safe throughout the day.

Several area organizations, including area Go Texan committees, spend the day around a village of barbeque pits cooking and serving great food. There are also several other selections, donated by various area restaurants, that are not cooked on the pits. Carnival games, service vendors, bounce houses, mechanical bull, petting zoo, and other activities round out the day.

There is no charge for participants and their families to take part. Each participant will walk away with a t-shirt, backpack, gold medal, cowboy hat, bandana, and more. Food for participants, families, and volunteers will be offered free of charge.

They are still accepting registrations for participants and volunteers. Registration forms can be found on their website, https://www.specialangelsrodeo.org/ . Please email, fax, or deliver registration forms to Farmer’s Mercantile. On-site registration will be available Saturday morning for those who can’t get the paperwork turned in ahead of time.

Volunteers and spectators are asked to park at Cowboy Church of Orange County, 673 FM 1078. There will be shuttle vans bringing everyone back and forth between that location and T2 Arena. Those groups arriving on buses or vans can drop off at T2 and then park at the offsite location.

Keep Orange County Beautiful (KOCB,) presented the 4th Quarter Beautification Award to Dr. Thomas Johnson, President of Lamar State College Orange (LSC-O). Members of his staff, together with board members of KOCB attended the presentation.

Deborah Bednar, president of the county’s beautification organization, said she has long admired the campus landscaping. “It’s inspiring to the community to see that the Future is Bright Orange,” Bednar said, referencing the LSCO slogan.

Dr. Johnson said he appreciates the award because of the pride our campus takes in maintaining a clean and pleasant campus environment. “I often hear from people who are visiting our campus for the first time that they had no idea our campus was so beautiful,” he said. LSC-O will be celebrating their 50th Birthday Bash on Tuesday, October 29th.  Dr. Johnson hopes that the community will come out and visit the campus that day.

Sandra Hoke, a KOCB member, commented that she hopes that others in the community will follow suit to the way Lamar State College Orange maintains the campus.

KOCB has been giving quarterly beautification awards in Orange County for over a decade. KOCB is affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep American Beautiful. KOCB has been active in Orange County since 1997.  Previous Beautification Award recipients include Salvation Army, Sabine Federal Credit Union, and Industrial Thermal Services.

A major focus for KOCB in 2019 has been to organize and implement Tire Recycle and Scrap Metal Collection events in Orange County.  During 2019 two events were held, one in March and the second in July. Over 1,000 tires were collected and recycled and over 10,000 pounds of scrap metal were removed from the backyards, vacant lots, and drainage ditches in Orange County.  These projects align with all three of KOCB values of trash abatement, recycling, and beautification.
