Who wants all -you-can-eat-crawfish provided by world-class competitors? On Saturday, May 1, 2021, the Mauriceville Heritage Association will be providing some of the best crawfish in the area at an unbeatable all-you-can-eat (AYCE) price. Spend the day listening to great music and eat as much crawfish as you want. Visit with the competitors and choose your favorite for the Patron’s Choice Award. Only those who have purchased AYCE tickets will be allowed in the AYCE area and children 10 and under are free.

All-You-Can-Eat-Crawfish will be available from 12 PM to 6 PM or while supplies last, on Saturday, May 1, 2021. Only those who have purchased AYCE tickets will be allowed in the AYCE area and children 10 and under are free.

Festivities kick off Saturday morning with their yearly parade @ 10:00 East down Hwy 12, turning South onto Hwy 62. Live in concert at the Crawfish Bah will be Jon Wolfe and Jamie Bergeron. A seasoned performer, Wolfe has opened for some of the country’s biggest stars and has played more than 400 live shows over the past four years. Jamie Bergeron and The Kickin’ Cajuns have become one of south Louisiana’s most popular musical acts, having been awarded the Times of Acadiana‘s Best Cajun Band an incredible 16 years in a row.

The Cook-off is hosted by the Mauriceville Heritage Association, a local non-profit corporation benefitting Mauriceville and the greater Northern Orange County. They assist with needed funding for disaster relief, area beautification projects, local school districts, donations for various non-profit programs, scholarships, and provide a Community Center as well as land for nonprofit organization use.

On Saturday, May 15, 2021, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the South East Texas Regional Planning Commission (SETRPC) is hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste and Scrap Tire Collection Event. The event will be held in the parking lot of the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center at 3401 Cultural Center Drive in Port Arthur. The event is open to all Southeast Texas residents.

During this free event, the SETRPC collects items that could pose health and environmental risks if disposed of improperly. According to Bob Dickinson, Director of Transportation and Environmental Resources Division, “The average home can accumulate 100 pounds of hazardous waste in a garage or in the cabinets at home. It’s imperative that Southeast Texans take a proactive approach in properly disposing of these items not only to protect their own health but the quality of life in our region.”

The SETRPC will accept household hazardous items including paints, cleaners, antifreeze, car batteries, used oil, insecticides, swimming pool chemicals, and much more. “It’s not acceptable to throw batteries, paint, or other hazardous waste in a trash can. Once these items get to the landfill, they release pollutants that contribute to poor air quality. Southeast Texans are encouraged to do their part to protect the health of their neighbors and the environment by properly disposing of their hazardous waste during this free collection event,” says Shanna Burke, SETRPC Executive Director.

The SETRPC will also collect scrap tires at no charge for the first eight tires. A cash disposal fee of $1.00 is required for each additional tire – oversized tires are not accepted. Materials not accepted
during this event include; electronics, appliances, oversized tires, explosives, ammunition, garbage, scrap metal, mercury, smoke detectors, exit signs, medical waste and medications and pharmaceuticals.

The HHW event is a program of the SETRPC through a grant provided by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

CASA of the Sabine Neches Region invites the entire Orange County community to join us as we remember those children who lost their lives in Texas due to abuse and/or neglect in 2020 and renew our commitment to do all we can to prevent future abuse, neglect, and loss of life. The vigil is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13, 2021, from 6:00 PM-7:00 PM at 801 W Division Ave. in Orange.

Local officials and partners are invited to join. Mark your calendars and grab your kiddos for some fun at the Orange Train Depot for Depot Day 2021. Scheduled for May 1 from 10 AM – 2 PM at the Orange Train Depot at 1210 Green Avenue in Orange, Depot Days will feature a kiddie train, bouncy house, petting zoo, balloon artist, pony rides, and drawings for a girl’s and a boy’s bicycle.

Food and drink will also be available, and entertainment will be provided by The Orange Community Players and The Orange Blossom Dancers.

Admission is free, but tickets are required for the attractions. Tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.

Learning how to be more self-sufficient by discovering how a  farm works and where food comes from is the goal of Chosen Weeds Farm’s new Famly Homesteading Classes.  Owner/farmer Stephanie Harren will teach families:

• How to raise chickens and ducks.
• How to plant your own veggies with your family’s own veggie plot and all the produce that comes with it
• Milk goats
• Taste goat milk
• How to use herbs
• Product samples including eggs, soaps, and veggies

All classes will be held at the farm in Bridge City. Dates and times of the classes are:

• April 17: 10-12
• April 17: 2-4
• April 24: 10-12
• April 24 1-3

The cost is $150 per family. There is a non-refundable $50 deposit to hold your spot. You can register here for the program.

The homesteading class includes:

• One-on-one instruction from a REAL farmer
• Access to the farmer to ask questions after the class is over via text, email, and/or phone calls
• Farm products at the time of class
• Family garden plot plus all the produce that comes with it
• Farm Tour which includes milking goats
• Learn how to raise ducks and chickens including egg collection, incubation, and using a brooder.
• Some surprise kids’ activities!
