The Stephens House Honored with Texas Historical Marker on Old Orange Historic District Day

Apiece of Orange’s rich history was formally recognized as The Stephens House, located at 1008 Pine Avenue, received an Official Texas Historical Marker during a dedication ceremony held on Old Orange Historic District Day. The event, hosted jointly by the Texas Historical Commission and the Orange County Historical Commission, celebrated the cultural legacy of one of the city’s architectural treasures.

The Stephens House stands as a crown jewel within the Old Orange Historic District, the city’s first subdivision established in the 1870s. Bounded by Green Avenue, Park Avenue, and 1st to 16th Streets, the district is renowned for its historic charm, distinctive architecture, and preservation of Orange’s early character. The Stephens House exemplifies these qualities and is currently owned by Kenneth and Beth Wheeler, who have lovingly maintained its historic integrity.

The dedication ceremony began with a welcome and introductions from Margaret Toal, Chair of the Orange County Historical Commission. Mayor Larry Spears Jr. followed with a Presentation of Proclamation, officially recognizing the home’s historical and cultural significance. Jerry Pennington, also with the Historical Commission, delivered an engaging narrative on the home’s history and its role in the community.

The event’s centerpiece—the unveiling of the official Texas Historical Marker—was conducted by homeowner Kenneth Wheeler. This was followed by a reading of the marker text by William Hannan of the Historic Preservation Commission. Wheeler concluded the ceremony with heartfelt reflections and gratitude for the community’s support.

Guests were then welcomed to tour the meticulously preserved home and enjoy refreshments on the back patio, celebrating both the home’s legacy and the spirit of community preservation. The event was dedicated in memory of Dean Schirmer, a master craftsman remembered for his exceptional contributions to historical preservation in Orange.

The recognition of The Stephens House not only honors its past but also reinforces the importance of preserving Orange’s architectural and cultural heritage for future generations.
