The Stark Museum of Art is excited to announce the acquisition of a remarkable new piece by renowned artist Carolyn Crump. The artwork, titled “10th Cavalry Regiment” (2023), is now on display in Gallery 3 of the museum.

This stunning piece is a quilted vase made of cotton fabric, felt batting, polyester thread, fiber twine, and jute twine, preserved and hardened with fabric preservers, and features intricate hand-painted detailing. The work is 23 3/4 inches tall and reflects Crump’s unique approach to fiber art, blending traditional quilting techniques with sculptural elements to create a truly unique object.

Carolyn Crump brought the quilted vase to the museum during the “Black Pioneers” teacher workshop in March, where it was also featured during her Artist Talk. The piece captivated museum guests and the Stark Museum team, leading to its purchase through the Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Museum fund in 2024.

Carolyn Crump, born in 1960, is known for her vibrant fabric use and exploration of African American history and identity. The “10th Cavalry Regiment” quilted vase is inspired by the history of the African American soldiers who served in the 10th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army, often referred to as “Buffalo Soldiers.”

Visitors are encouraged to view this remarkable new addition to the museum’s collection in Gallery 3. The Stark Museum of Art is dedicated to preserving and celebrating American art and history, and this acquisition is a significant step in continuing that mission.
