Orange County Special Angels Rodeo Receives Prestigious TEGNA Foundation Grant

The Orange County Special Angels Rodeo, a nonprofit dedicated to creating inclusive rodeo experiences for individuals with special needs, has been awarded the esteemed 2024 TEGNA Foundation Grant by 12News. The funding will support the acquisition of vital equipment, including a new ramp to enhance accessibility for horseback riding activities, a cornerstone of the event’s programming.

For 14 years, the Special Angels Rodeo has hosted free, family-friendly annual events featuring bucking bulls, horses, carnival games, wagon rides, and a petting zoo. Founded by a passionate advocate for inclusion, the rodeo continues under the leadership of Vice President Jo Harris, who has worked tirelessly to create a safe and joyful environment for participants of all ages and abilities.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to put a smile on a kid’s face,” Harris shared with 12News. “Some of them are 80 years old, but they’re still kids, and they’re our kids.”

The event is designed in partnership with parents and organizations to ensure safety and accessibility. Thanks to local sponsorships and community support, the rodeo remains free for participants, allowing children and adults with special needs to take center stage.

“These kids don’t always get to be in the front; they’re usually on the sidelines. This way, they are the cowboys, and they are the cowgirls,” Harris explained. “They are the participants, not us…It’s their day.”

Kevin Rice, Marketing Director at 12News, praised the organization’s transformative impact: “This incredible organization provides life-changing experiences for children with special needs, bringing them joy, confidence, and a true sense of community.”

The Special Angels Rodeo continues to call on volunteers and supporters to join its mission of delivering unforgettable experiences to Southeast Texas’ special needs community.

“At 12News, we’re proud to be able to support an initiative like the Special Angels Rodeo and continue our mission of putting Southeast Texas first,” Rice added.
