After an illustrious tenure as President of Lamar State College Orange (LSCO) since October 2018, Dr. Thomas Johnson has announced that 2025 will mark his final year with the college, as announced by KOGT.com.  Dr. Johnson shared that his decision comes as he approaches his 63rd birthday, with plans to embark on new adventures with his wife, Karen.

“I’m about to turn 63, and there’s still some things me and my wife Karen want to do,” said Dr. Johnson. “I’ve spent 42 years in public service, and it’s time to do something else.”

Dr. Johnson’s career is a testament to dedicated service, including roles with Congressman Charlie Wilson, 20 years in law enforcement, and a leadership position at Tyler Junior College before succeeding Dr. Michael Shahan at LSCO.

Dr. Johnson spearheaded transformative initiatives at LSCO during his tenure, fulfilling a 10-year vision in just seven years. Highlights include:

  • Record-breaking enrollment and graduation rates
  • The addition of 20 new vocational programs
  • Completion of the 55,000-square-foot Academic Building and groundbreaking on the LSCO Welcome Center
  • Establishing a satellite campus in Hardin County and collaborating with LSC-Port Arthur and LIT to create a campus in Livingston
  • Launching a nationally successful bass fishing team
  • Introducing the beloved gator mascot, Tilley, and developing the Gatemouth Brown outdoor plaza, honoring the late Orange blues musician

Dr. Johnson expressed pride in these accomplishments, crediting his team, staff, and students for their dedication and success.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Johnson and his wife Karen have been deeply involved in the Orange community. Karen Johnson’s contributions to local organizations such as the United Way, OCARC, and Orange Christian Services have left a lasting impact.

“We love Orange and appreciate the people and businesses we’ve worked with over the years,” said Dr. Johnson.

Dr. Johnson will remain at LSCO through August 2025, overseeing two more graduations and the completion of the Welcome Center. The Orange community celebrates the Johnsons’ legacy and wishes them well in their future endeavors.
