End of an Era: Harry’s Appliances to Close After 64 Years in Orange

Harry’s Appliances will close its doors after more than six decades of serving the Orange community. The store opened in 1961 and announced a Going Out of Business Sale that will continue through the end of June 2025, marking the store’s 64th anniversary.

The decision to close follows the passing of founder Harry Stephens, who died in April 2024 at 82. Since his passing, his wife Margie Stephens, who had worked alongside Harry daily since their marriage in 1992, has managed the store alone.

Margie has confirmed that the decision to close was difficult. Since Harry’s passing, she has been so busy running the business that she has not had the time to grieve. Harry’s desk remains exactly as it was on his last day, and the sweet snacks he used to hide from her are still tucked away.

She has decided to retire due to personal health concerns requiring her attention. She affirmed that Harry built the business on a foundation of exceptional customer service, and she has worked hard to maintain that standard. However, she acknowledged that without Harry, the store simply no longer feels the same.

Although the store is closing, Margie hopes its legacy might live on. She is open to discussions with anyone seriously interested in continuing the business. She emphasized that Harry’s Appliances is a longstanding establishment in Orange and one of the few locally owned appliance retailers remaining in the region.

In addition to household appliances, Harry’s Appliances is known for a unique collection of antiques and memorabilia. Items from Harry’s cherished “Man Cave”—including a black-and-white checkerboard floor and near-life-size figures of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe—are also available for purchase during the sale.

Margie expressed heartfelt gratitude to their customers, noting that many have become close friends over the years due to their repeated loyalty and support.

Residents are invited to visit the store one last time, take advantage of sale prices, and help celebrate the remarkable legacy of a truly local business.
