The City of West Orange and the Orange County Historical Commission proudly announce the dedication of the city’s first-ever Texas Historical Commission marker, commemorating the legacy of The First Baptist Church of West Orange. The official unveiling ceremony will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the church’s historic location: 608 Dayton Street, West Orange, TX. The public is warmly invited to attend this meaningful event, which will include a short program followed by refreshments in the church foyer.
This milestone marker recognizes the profound significance of First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1902 by a missionary and a small group of followers, decades before the city’s incorporation in 1954. Since then, it has evolved into a cornerstone of the community, shaping the spiritual and cultural development of West Orange for over a century.
The Texas Historical Commission’s marker program honors a wide range of subjects — from architectural landmarks and pivotal events to notable individuals and enduring congregations. The First Baptist Church of West Orange is being recognized not only for its longevity but also for its influence: it was the founding congregation for three additional churches — Winfree, McDonald, and Calvary.
Despite challenges over the decades, including storms and floods, First Baptist Church remains a symbol of resilience and hope. As West Orange celebrates this moment in its history, the marker stands as a tribute not only to the past but also to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
