City of Orange Poised for Growth in 2024

City of Orange Applying for Additional Harvey Disaster Relief Funds

The City of Orange is about to bring a wave of exciting changes that promise to make Orange an even better place to live, work, and play in 2024. The city’s leaders have been hard at work planning and implementing various projects to accommodate the growing population and improve our community.

One of the most eagerly anticipated renovations is at the Cove Recreation Center, where exciting changes are on the horizon. A play escape is in the works, and a children’s village is set to be installed. This project is scheduled to kick off in January, and Knauf believes it will significantly enhance the quality of life for both residents and children in the Cove area.

The city has plans to add a brand-new parking lot at the Riverside Pavilion to accommodate more visitors. It’s clear that Orange is taking proactive steps to bolster its infrastructure and services in preparation for the arrival of new residents and businesses.

In late January, the city council will be considering a contract for the demolition of the Sabine Park Apartments, which are now under new management. These apartments have long been a concern due to their deteriorating condition, and the city aims to improve sanitation and safety for the neighboring community by taking down the next section of the complex.

Orange is also tackling drainage issues head-on. Crews are gearing up to add concrete lining to Coopers Gully drains, which will help facilitate faster drainage. It’s a crucial step in addressing a significant concern for our community, and the city has pledged to continue these drainage improvements throughout 2024.

Thanks to the installation of new tourist signs, tourists and residents will soon find it easier to navigate around town. These signs will guide visitors to popular landmarks like the museum and Lutcher Theater, reinforcing Orange’s welcoming attitude towards tourism.

As 2024 unfolds, Orange is poised for tremendous growth and development. From tearing down old buildings on 16th Street to make way for new businesses to exciting renovations at the Cove Recreation Center, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming year.

OFD Battalion Chief Joel Gilbert Graduates From LIT Regional Police Academy

The City of Orange Fire Department’s Battalion Chief Joel Gilbert has graduated from the Lamar Institute of Technology Regional Police Academy.

The Orange Fire Department sponsored Chief Gilbert to acquire a Texas Commission of Fire Protection Arson Investigator certification.

This makes him only one of five firefighters in the Orange Fire Department who are certified peace officers.

Cove Recreation Area Playground Completed

The City of Orange has announced that the Cove Recreation Area playground has been completed just in time for Christmas break.

When fully complete, the recreation area will feature a walking trail, a playscape with shade sails, benches, a pavilion, and other amenities, creating a space for residents of all ages to enjoy.

The recreation area is along DuPont Drive and was once the site of the old Cove School. The school had been sold to private owners and had been vacant for nearly 30 years. The city bought the property with the specific goal of tearing down the dilapidated school and turning the land into a park.

Port of Orange Receives $18.1 Million

Four Southeast Texas ports are getting millions of dollars from the State of Texas. The Beaumont, Orange, Port Arthur, and Sabine Pass ports will split over $66 million. The Port of Orange received $18.1 million.

The Port of Orange will receive two grants to help with funding a portion of these projects. One for 2.7 Million for Dravo Truck Queuing + Utility Enhancements and the Second for 15.4 Million for a Cargo Loading Facility.

State and local leaders met at the Port of Orange to celebrate on Monday, December 18, 2023. Speaker of the House Dade Phelan, Senator Robert Nichols, and Representative Christian Manuel were in attendance as well. The money was secured during this year’s state legislative session.

According to Phelan, this is the first time in history that the state is investing in Texas ports. “This just provides more infrastructure, provides for jobs, very high quality jobs. And let me not call them jobs. These are careers for Southeast Texans,” said Phelan. Speaker Phelan says the money will go towards six different projects happening between the four ports.
