Orange County Offices Remain Open in Limited Capacity

First Case of COVID-19 Reported in Orange County

After a meeting with Orange County Department Heads and Elected Officials, the County Offices will remain open and have implemented procedures to stay open but in a safe manner in accordance with CDC advisement in reference to the Coronavirus. Below are some of the specific changes that citizens need to be aware of.

Orange County District Courts and Count Court at Law Court Judges have suspended jury trials through April 30, 2020. Only emergency type hearings will be heard. To minimize walk-in traffic to offices, the Judges are urging attorneys and/or citizens to call or email their offices with questions or concerns.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has canceled all inmate visitation in the Orange County Jail to help eliminate exposure. Attorney visits are still allowed. Outside inmate work crews have been canceled and inmates will remain in the jail. The Orange County Judges and the Sheriff and his staff are working together to maintain a safe environment for employees and inmates.

The County Office will continue operating at their normal business hours as of now and will monitor the situation and adjust as needed. Citizens are encouraged to phone and email departments to minimize the walk-in traffic to the offices. Phone numbers and emails can be found on the Orange County website.

Orange County Issues Disaster Declaration and Emergency Order

Orange County Judge John Gothia has issued a disaster declaration for Orange County effective immediately for the next 30 days..

Provisions within the declaration:

  • Any event sponsored by Orange County will cease
  • No gatherings of events of greater than 50 people
  • Limit visitation in nursing homes and senior centers
  • 24 Hour curfew in place for those under 18, not in school, and not accompanied by parent or guardian, or not arriving at or leaving from place of employment
  • punishment for price gouging for a variety of goods

Grocery stores and restaurants are left up to decide how to operate.

Home-Based Business Stipulations Outlined for City of Orange

The City of Orange recognizes that home-based businesses are becoming a more common method of working. Home-based businesses help alleviate traffic, help decrease the cost of doing business, allow people to work who might otherwise be unable to work, and are appropriate within residential areas, subject to certain provisions which are established to maintain the character and property values of existing residential areas. A home-based business must be approved by the Director of Planning and Community Development and must meet each of the following requirements:

• The home occupation shall be within the principal residence or a permitted accessory building;
• The home occupation shall not occupy more than 50 percent of the gross floor area of the principal residence;
• There shall be no exterior indication (including signs and banners) that the home occupation is taking place;
• There shall be no employees for the home occupation other than immediate members of the family, such as mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter;
• There shall be no traffic generated by the home occupation other than that normally associated with residential use; and
• There shall be no use of equipment or process carried on that would create a nuisance to the neighboring properties.

Lions Den Park Conditions Reviewed

The Orange City Council, city staff, and over forty members of the public participated in a public workshop to discuss the future of Lions Den Park on Tuesday, March 3 in the Orange Library Auditorium. City Manager Mike Kunst presented to those in attendance a review of the current situation at the park, which is now closed to the public due to safety concerns. A recent safety inspection of the wooden castle found it unsafe for continued use.

During the hour-long meeting, Kunst displayed pictures and graphics of playground options that could replace the twenty-year-old wooden castle. After the presentation, several members of the public offered their thoughts, concerns, and opinions on the future of the Lion’s Den Park playground. While the council took no action at the meeting, they did agree to revisit options for playground equipment and designs during the City Council meeting of Tuesday, March 24 which starts at 5:30 pm.

The Orange City Council welcomes the Citizens of Orange to offer their thoughts on the playground during the Citizen Comments section of either council meeting on March 10 or March 24. Also, citizens may provide their feedback via email at socialmedia@orangetexasgov.us.

The Lion’s Den playground will remain closed until further notice.

City Council Invites Public to Meeting About Lions Den Park

Orange Lions City Park Closed Indefinitely

The City of Orange invites the public to join them at a special call meeting of the Orange City Council to discuss Lions Den Park.

This meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at 5:30 pm in the Public Library Auditorium. There will be a presentation, discussion, and possible action regarding the park.

As part of this meeting, the City Council is soliciting ideas from the citizens of Orange for the future of the park. Please come be part of the discussion about our park.
