Orange County United Way Hosting 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff Fundraiser

Orange County Receives $51,171 for Food and Shelter Programs

Orange County United Way is hosting its second annual Chili Cookoff on Thursday, November 7t, 2019,  from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m at the Dow Business Center (formerly DERA).  Last year this event was held for their Corporate Partners on Chemical Row. This year they are expanding to include ALL local businesses.

Pre-orders will be accepted by Friday, November 1, and you will pay only $7 for a bowl of chili, crackers and soft drinks or bottled water. Chili is $10 at the door.

Pre-orders will be provided by Old Orange Cafe. Delivery will be available for pre-orders of 10 or more.  Wristbands for $20 are available to taste all the chili entries and receive one bowl of chili, crackers and a drink. Participants will meet and greet partner agency representatives and have a chance to win door prizes. All chili proceeds benefit United Way of Orange County.

Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Honda of Orange with Ribbon-Cutting

The Greater Orange Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for our new member Honda of Orange at 1800 Strickland Dr in Orange.

Owners Mark Frey and Ed Van Huis welcomed everyone and report that they have bought out this business that originally opened in the 1960’s.

Honda of Orange is a one-stop motorsport dealership carrying all Honda motorcycles, off-road vehicles, all Honda power equipment, and Honda gear. They also have a full-service shop and some the friendliest people around.

Mark Frey explained that their new facility is a family-friendly environment where they are selling fun! Services include parts, service, inventory, riding gear, jewelry, customized bikes, and a large variety of 4-wheelers. Other brand names are also sold at this location.

SBA Business Recover Center Opens in Orange

The U.S. Small Business Administration and the Texas Gulf Coast Small Business Development Center today announced the opening of an SBA Business Recovery Center in Orange on Friday, Oct. 11, to provide a wide range of services to businesses impacted by Tropical Storm Imelda that occurred Sept. 17 – 23, 2019.

“Due to the severe property damage and economic losses inflicted on Texas businesses, we want to provide every available service to help get them back on their feet,” said SBA’s Director Tanya N. Garfield of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Disaster Field Operations Center-West. “The center will provide a one-stop location for businesses to access a variety of specialized help. SBA customer service representatives will be available to meet individually with each business owner,” she added. No appointment is necessary. All services are provided free of charge. The center will open as indicated below.

SBA customer service representatives will meet with each business owner to explain how an SBA disaster loan can help finance their recovery. They will answer questions about SBA’s disaster loan program, explain the application process and help each business owner complete their electronic loan application,” Garfield said.

According to Texas Gulf Coast SBDC Network Executive Director Dr. Steve Lawrence, SBDC business advisors will provide business assistance to clients on a wide variety of matters designed to help small business owners re-establish their operations, overcome the effects of the disaster and plan for their future. “Services include assessing business economic injury, evaluating the business’s strength, cash flow projections and, most importantly, a review of options with the business owner to help them evaluate their alternatives and make decisions that are appropriate for their situation,” he said.

Businesses of any size and private, nonprofit organizations may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. These loans cover losses that are not fully covered by insurance or other recoveries.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size, SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any property damage.

For business owners who are unable to visit the business recovery center, they may apply online using SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela.

SBA representatives will meet with business owners and residents at disaster recovery centers located throughout the impacted area as they are established. For a list of locations, or to receive additional disaster assistance information, visit SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at (800) 659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information.  Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing may call (800) 877-8339. The deadline to apply for property damage is Dec. 3, 2019. The deadline to apply for economic injury is July 6, 2020.

Together Thursday Concert Series Begin Oct. 17 with Bag of Donuts

The City of Orange and Dow have partnered together to host Together Thursdays, a free outdoor concert series. Together Thursdays will be held at the Riverfront Boardwalk and Pavilion from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. and will feature the New Orleans party band, Bag of Donuts, on October 17 and Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band on October 24. Food and drinks will be available for purchase during the event.

With a flair for kabuki make-up and extravagant costumes, the four New Orleans natives in Bag of Donuts cover songs in a style they have branded as Superpop: Any song popular from any era. In the great tradition of stunning acts, BOD has to be experienced live to fully feel the impact. The universality of their show stems from the idea that everyone likes to have an escape, a release.

In light of the recent flooding that has impacted our community, the City of Orange and Dow believe it is more important than ever to show our support for the Orange area and spend time with our neighbors. We want to show that “Together” we will be working to rebuild and recover.

Orange County Economic Development Corporation Launches New Website

The Orange County Economic Development Corporation has launched a new version of its website, www.orangecountyedc.com. The new site features a modern design, improved functionality, and easy access to information allowing visitors to make informed decisions about Orange County and our economy.

The improved site includes many highly utilized applications such as the site database and demographics portal, and now includes an interactive map, useful links, and a government community calendar.

“The final product is representative of everyone’s needs. The site selector, the business owner and the Orange County citizen are all represented in the information included on the new site.” said Jessica Hill, Executive Director.

The Orange County EDC chose Marketing Alliance to facilitate the redesign and tell the story of Orange County’s economic opportunities. Marketing Alliance specializes in economic development websites and has developed a portfolio of more than 250 U.S. communities.
