Stark Museum of Art to Hold Lunch and Look @ Home Early Texas Encounter

Join the Stark Museum of Art and Curator Sarah E. Boehme to view a painting of Early Texas history. This program will take place on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from Noon to 1 p.m.

Dr. Boehme will introduce the Stark Museum’s new acquisition, “Indian Council, Tehuacana Creek,” Texas, by John Mix Stanley. The painting is an eyewitness account of a council during the time of the Republic of Texas. It provides an opportunity to examine Early Texas relations with indigenous peoples along with Stanley’s artistic development. Advanced registration is required for this FREE program. Registration will close on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.

This Lunch & Look @ Home program will be facilitated live through Zoom from the Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas. Participants are encouraged to download Zoom prior to the event. For more information, including tutorials for using Zoom, please visit the Resources page on the Zoom website.

Stark Museum of Art Hosting Create Workshop

Create a landscape drawing using only lines at the October 14, 2023 CREATE! Workshop: Linear Landscape from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Stark Museum of Art. Each participant will create their own original oversized 12″x19″ drawing. All materials will be included with the $5 material fee.

CREATE! Workshops are recommended for ages 8 and up and are designed to be multi-generational, but please note that younger children may require additional assistance from their accompanying grown-ups. We encourage family collaboration during these workshops. Children age 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult registered for the workshop. Registrants will briefly discuss a selected collection item and then will appreciate art in a new way when they make their own art in the studio. Some CREATE! Workshop artwork must be fired in the kiln. Artwork will be available approximately three weeks after the class. Please check with your teaching artists to confirm your pick-up dates.

CREATE! Workshops have a small material fee per registrant, depending on the supplies used in the workshop. Space is limited to 20 people per session, including children and adults – all attendees must register.

Stark Museum of Art to Offer Adult Studio Class

Develop your ability to create observational drawings from life. During this three-week class, you will learn how to create representational pencil drawings of a Western still-life scene successfully. Participants will explore sighting techniques and compositional choices, as well as improve their ability to depict form, light, and shadow, as well as complete a 14″x17″ still life study.

This three-day class will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 11, and 18, 2023, from 2:00-4:30 p.m., focusing on specific skill building. Brief at-home assignments may be assigned during the course of the workshop that will reinforce the instruction that is given in the studio. Class size is limited to a maximum of 10 participants.

Registration is $40 per person, and all materials are provided and will be yours to keep at the conclusion of the workshop.

Stark Museum to Host After School Art Program

The Stark Museum of Art will be hosting an Afterschool Art program on Thursdays from October 5-26, 2023. Build your drawing techniques by learning how to draw what you see. Students in 5th-8th grades will learn how to create realistic pencil drawings successfully during this four-week class. Students will refine drawing skills by practicing hand-eye coordination, creating 3-D forms using pencil shading, and learning how the use of shadows will add realism and depth to their drawings. The skills learned can be applied to techniques across other types of media. Students will complete an 11″x14″ still life study.

This four-week class will meet from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and will focus on specific skill building. Students may be assigned some brief at-home assignments during the class that will reinforce the instruction given in the studio. Class size is limited to a maximum of 10 students. Registration is $40 per student, and all materials are provided and yours to keep at the conclusion of the workshop.

Stark Museum Announces Second Annual College Juried Art Exhibition

The Stark Museum of Art is pleased to announce its second Annual College Juried Art Exhibition. The exhibition will feature original works of art from college and university students in Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana. The exhibition will be held November 4, 2023 – December 21, 2023, in the Community Art Gallery at the Stark Museum of Art. The exhibition is open to all students currently enrolled in a college or university located in Orange County, TX, Jefferson County, TX, or Calcasieu Parish, LA.

The College Juried Art Exhibition will be juried by staff at the Stark Museum of Art. Three awards will be selected by the staff juror and one award selected by the public:

Best of Show – $300 gift certificate for art supplies (selected by staff juror)
2 Honorable Mentions – $100 gift certificate for art supplies (selected by staff juror)

Important Dates and Information:

Online tutorial videos for writing an artist statement and framing will be available on September 15, 2023.

Complete submissions, including completed registration forms, images, and artist’s statement, must be emailed to collegejuried@starkmuseum.org by October 15, 2023, at 11:59 p.m.

Artwork submitted for the exhibition will be juried digitally. Artists will be notified by email of their acceptance into the exhibition no later than October 18, 2023 at 5:00 p.m.

Artwork selected for the exhibition must be delivered framed and ready to hang to the Stark Museum of Art on October 27 between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Artwork not meeting framing criteria as described below or not delivered by this time will not be accepted into the exhibition.
An Artists Reception will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the museum’s Date Night at the Museum. Award winners will be announced during the Artist’s Reception.

Exhibited artwork must be picked up between January 5-6, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Museum’s Welcome Desk. Artwork that is not picked up by 4:00 p.m. on January 6, 2024 will be deemed donated and will be discarded or used for other purposes as deemed appropriate by the Stark Museum.
