In response to changes following the 89th Legislative Session and the passage of school vouchers in Texas, the Bridge City Independent School District (BCISD) has announced the implementation of limited open enrollment, effective with the upcoming school year.
This carefully considered policy is a strategic move designed to protect the district’s future while maintaining the high standards and expectations the community values.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Kelly emphasized that this is not an open enrollment without limits. BCISD will maintain full control over student admissions and has established strict eligibility criteria to ensure academic integrity and the quality of education remain uncompromised.
To qualify for transfer into Bridge City ISD under this limited open enrollment policy, students must:
- Have no disciplinary issues from the previous school year
- Maintain an attendance rate of 90% or better
- Have passed all state assessments from the previous year
- Meet additional requirements as determined by the district
Additionally, BCISD will only accept transfers in grade levels with available space. Overcrowded grade levels will not be considered, and transfer status may be revoked if eligibility standards are not maintained during the year.
“This is a measured, strategic response to protect Bridge City ISD resources, maintain funding, and stay competitive in a new educational landscape, without compromising the high expectations and culture our community values,” said Dr. Kelly.
Currently, all Orange County school districts — with the exception of Orangefield — already operate under some form of open enrollment. Bridge City ISD estimates a small number of students, approximately 10 districtwide, will be eligible under this policy.
The district assures families that its priority remains on serving the students and families who call Bridge City home, while taking steps to adapt to a changing educational environment.
